“The Rustic” Beanie

Hand knitted using Chiloquin, Oregon grown and processed, chocolate-brown wool and a two-by-two ribbed pattern, the Rustic beanie is the perfect winter adventure hat.

Where there’s sheep, there’s wool… and wool people! It wasn’t long after starting Klamath Basin Wool Works that I got the call from a sheep friend. “There’s a woman who had some of my corriedale sheep, and now has bins of yarn she want to get rid of.”

She had me at “bins “.

Turns out there were three bins. All were full of yarn from the woman’s wool that had been grown just down the street and milled about 10 years ago at a now defunct mill in Canby, Oregon. Two of those bins were full of brown and white bulky yarn that has been since woven into rugs. The other bin overfilled with skeins of softer, lighter weight chocolate-brown yarn. Soft, but roughly spun the best use of the yarn wasn’t clear immediately.

Until, that is, one winter day when I needed a really warm beanie to wear while stacking wood. Something sparked the memory of that yarn bin and the First Rustic Beanie was cast on that night.
