Off the Grid Mitts

My first knitting pattern!

Two winters ago, on a particularly cold dog walk, I reconsidered fingerless mittens. Until that morning, mittens without fingers seemed counter-intuitive.  Even silly.  But as I fumbled to take my (regular) mitten off in order to attach the dog leash to the collar I had a moment of doubt.  That doubt grew  ten minutes later when I tried to yank my mittens off in time to answer my cell phone.  Maybe, just maybe, mittens that covered by hands, but left my fingers free would be a good idea!

Meanwhile, back in the yarn closet, the stash of colorful yarn bits was growing.  You know that yarn, too pretty to throw away, too short to knit anything.  Unless … you were knitting something really small, or you were using the mosaic technique.

And voila!  The Off the Grid Mitts were born!!   Knit in the round with size 3  dpns or a longer circular needle, the pattern uses a twisted rib for the cuffs, and the mosaic pattern for the mitt body. Thumb increases are worked across the palm creating the unique  “Off the Grid” effect, and also making  for easy increase counting.

Using less than 80 yds of the main color and half that for the contrast color these mitts are great for stash busting.  They are also extremely warm and useful!
