The Magic That is Brioche Knitting

Brioche knitting is a technique that creates a beautiful, squishy, reversible fabric with endless design possibilities. It’s twice as labor intensive than ‘regular’ knitting because for each row the knitter makes two passes instead of one but the resulting reversible fabric is worth it – especially if the end product is viewable on both sides.

Scarves, are in fact, the perfect brioche product. It’s so nice to be able to wrap up all cozy in a scarf and have designs on both sides, with no real front or back to the work. And what is really magical about two color brioche is that the designs usually mirror one another creating a day/night effect that is particularly stunning, or the ‘front’ and ‘back’ can have totally different patterns.

I’m currently doing a test night for a brioche sweater. I’ve never knit a brioche sweater before and as the days get progressively cooler, I’ve very excited about have such a soft squishy sweater to wrap up in. But… in the meantime, I’m fascinated by how different the sides are – to the point I wish I could make this sweater reversible! Luckily I’ve got a few more weeks of knitting to ponder that option.
